For participants

By participating in ESSEC Experimental Research Lab studies you become a valued member of our community. The insight you provide is vital to our researchers who express their gratitude through a variety of compensations (bonus points, money...).

Your participation in any research is strictly voluntary. As a participant you have the rights to be treated ethically and respectfully, to be informed of the nature of the experiment, and to withdraw your participation at any time.

You will be informed of the results by mail, normally 3 to 4 months after the experiment. In general, ESSEC researchers involved in experimental research present their results as an ESSEC Working Paper. In this case, you will receive a pdf version of the document.

Marketing Studies

Who can participate?

You can participate if you are registered in a marketing course during the current term. In this case, you have an account on our SONA systems.

Your user ID is your Banner Student Identity number and your password will be sent by email to your ESSEC e-mail address.

Signing up for studies

The first step is to log into SONA to browse and select available studies. A list of studies with available time slots is updated daily on the site, and with the creation of your SONA account you will receive notifications of upcoming studies.

Study length and compensation

Generally, our studies run from a ten minutes to an hour. There may be studies that run longer as well, but compensation is relative to study length and difficulty. Compensation most often comes in the form of bonus points added to your marketing course grade at the end of the term.

You may receive up to 1 bonus point on top of your final grade.
Scale :
  • 0.2 points for participating in a short experiment/survey (lasts less than30min)
  • 0.4 points for participating in a long experiment/survey (lasts more than 30 min)
Some researchers also choose to provide participants with money.

Economics studies

Who can participate?

All students at ESSEC can participate in Economics studies. The first step to joining is to create an account on our participant pool. Most of these studies require you to be physically present at the experiment site. Of course, feel free to sign up for both participant pools!

Study Length and Compensation
Our studies generally run from a half hour to an hour. There may be studies that run longer as well, but compensation is relative to study length and difficulty. Compensation most often comes in the form of monetary reimbursement, on average €7 for a half hour study and €15 or higher for an hour study. Participating in an experiment also will provide you with a unique feeling of contributing to advancing knowledge in economics.

Where do the studies take place?

Most of the studies take place in the Data Lab on the campus of Cergy.
